March 2016 was an interesting month. After traveling abroad on an extended holiday, I’d returned to a job that I strongly disliked. Not knocking the finance industry for those who enjoy it, but it just wasn’t for me (and with having my MA degree in sociology, it made absolutely no sense). I knew it was time to make some changes.
I worked up the courage to put in my two weeks notice, but not before purchasing a ticket to Lima, Peru. I found a great deal on secretflying.com that included a RT flight from Baltimore to Lima for $291. The only catch was that I’d have to fly out of BWI so I purchased a one-way Greyhound bus ticket from Raleigh to Baltimore for $17. I also purposely selected the returning flight option that had a connection in Raleigh… and of course, left the airport once there, instead of continuing on to Baltimore (shhh, don’t tell Delta about my travel hack). I traveled from Raleigh to Peru, and back, for a total of $308!
Knowing that I wouldn’t be returning to a less than satisfactory job allowed me to really enjoy my escape and embrace this special country. Peru was everything I’ve dreamed of, and more. I can say wholeheartedly that it’s a great place to travel solo. Because it’s such a sought-after tourist destination, I was rarely alone and found it very easy to make new friends. Peruvian’s are super friendly and engaging. The landscape is gorgeous and diverse. The culture is exuberant, colorful, and fascinating.
During my ten day trip, I was able to explore Lima, Cusco, the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, and Puno/Lake Titicaca. These are some of the highlights.
Take aways? Always trust your gut. If you don’t like your job, find a better one. If you want to see a wonder of the world or a new country, buy that inexpensive plane ticket. The choice is yours. And go visit Peru!
